Four years ago, on the campaign trail, President Obama stated that he wouldn’t shop at Wal-Mart because of its anti-union polices and unfair treatment of workers days later, Michelle Obama resigned from the board of Tree Foods, a Wal-Mart vendor. Even the Obamas themselves have criticized Wal-Mart in the past. Wal-Mart has long been known for fighting unions, paying low wages, and not offering its workers decent benefits. While yesterday’s announcement comes with the White House seal of approval, and could well be an important step toward increased access to healthier food, the retailer’s harsh treatment of its workers still casts a pall on the good this does. However, as the world’s largest retailer, with upwards of 60,000 suppliers, any decision Wal-Mart makes carries considerable weight and has the potential to benefit the most Americans. Similar efforts have been made by smaller food companies and many prominent government officials have voiced strong commitments to nutrition issues NYC Mayor Bloomberg recently announced a plan to reduce sodium in US foods by 25%. Obama explained that the retailer’s commitment to healthier food is a “huge victory for folks all across the country” and is a great sign that her “ Let’s Move” campaign against childhood obesity is gaining traction among business. It also calls for lowering prices on produce and developing a logo to help customers more easily identify healthy food items. The plan calls for reducing the levels of sugar and sodium, and eliminating all trans fat in packaged food. What do First Lady Michelle Obama and the world’s largest retailer have in common? Before yesterday, you would be hard-pressed for an answer, but Wal-Mart and Obama found common cause in the goal of a healthier America on Thursday when they unveiled the retailer’s plans to make the foods it sells healthier and more affordable.

The hot beverage featured today is called a Caramel Macchiato. Warning you, it’s going to be hard to pick just one. You can scroll around and find your favorites. So, that’s what I have been doing for a while now. What can I say? I love everything Starbucks!īecause I can’t go out and buy one of my favorite beverages or bakery items on a daily basis, it was time to start creating my own versions of my favorites right at home. If you have been on this blog before you know there are bunches of copycat Starbucks recipes to see. But, I may add a little more caramel to mine. Comes out tasting so similar to the original. This doesn’t change the fact that it’s still a very enjoyable, flavorful fall time sipper. This copycat Starbucks caramel macchiato is so easy and simple to make. Despite the very Instagram worthy opening photo you get, the bulk of this beverage experience is identical to a latte. The swirl of milk and sugary pumpkin flavor permeated throughout the espresso creating a great blend. Regardless of appearances and pinky out coffee drinking, the beverage was very enjoyable. To me, it seems that a macchiato would be better consumed by sipping to truly experience the multiple layers, because as soon as I put the straw into the socket, the layers were gone and I pretty much had what looked like a standard iced latte. Somewhat skeptical upon ordering, I was pleasantly surprised when, despite the initial “ordering on the first day” confusion, the beverage handed to me indeed had the intended layer appearance. Website documentation as well as commercials boast this beverage as being hand-crafted, doing everything they can to convince consumers that this not just any seasonal drink and is worth the premium price. One can imagine the extra helping of espresso contributes to this price, but one must hope that this is the case because this beverage could easily be confused with a standard flavored latte depending on preparation. Dunkin Donuts released their pumpkin coffees, iced coffees, lattes, muffin, and donuts at the beginning of September, but this year they have released a new drink variation mid season. Opponents also argue that the typical minimum wage worker is a suburban teenager living with middle or upper class parents. Interesting the even liberal “capitalists”, like Bill Gates, are in solidarity with their billionaire brethren opposed to raising the minimum wage. It’ s simple -more overall income goes to labor, than to capital. Raising the bottom always leads to restructurings that reach all the way up the wage and salary scales of every economic sector. The minimum wage will indirectly raise the wages of millions more. ![]() The CBO estimate of the total direct beneficiaries is almost identical to the 16.7 million worker estimate produced by the Economic Policy Institute. CBO, instead, estimates that about 16.5 million workers would receive a wage increase because the CBO correctly factored in that millions more workers who earn between the current federal minimum wage and the new proposed level of $10.10 would also receive a pay increase.” As Economist John Schmidt of CEPR writes: “Opponents of the minimum wage like to cite Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) numbers that suggest that there are only about 1.6 million minimum-wage workers, ignoring that this figure refers only to worker who earn exactly the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. The minimum wage will directly benefit tens of millions of workers. ![]() ![]() The CBO report is mostly positive on raising the minimum wage. Summarizing those studies is a daunting task, but two recent meta-studies analyzing the research conducted since the early 1990s concludes that the minimum wage has little or no discernible effect on the employment prospects of low-wage workers. Let’s raise the wage and we’ll prove the CBO wrong again.”Įconomists have conducted hundreds of studies of the employment impact of the minimum wage. Our country is finally poised to lift millions out of poverty and make our country work for the people who work. Here, its is hard not to question the credibility of CBO Executive Director Doug Elmendorf, who at one time had a decent reputation as an economist, but then accepted the role of chief economic spokesperson for the Romney presidential campaign, which quickly lost all connection with the truth.ĪFL-CIO President Richard Trumka captured a key aspect of this controversy: “Every time momentum builds for lifting wages, conservative ideologues say it will cost jobs. The only major exception -which has nonetheless dominated media coverage – was the impact on employment.
